The Precautionary Approach is a framework for assessing and acting upon stock declines. This method of fisheries management is used all over the world and has been adopted by DFO as a way to manage Atlantic Salmon and striped bass fisheries.

"A key component of the Precautionary Approach Framework requires that when a stock has declined to the Critical Zone, a rebuilding plan must be in place with the aim of having a high probability of the stock growing out of the Critical Zone within a reasonable timeframe," says Fisheries and Oceans Canada.

The Miramichi Salmon Association, along with other organizations, stakeholders, rightsholders, and the province of New Brunswick, advocate to make sure that Precautionary Approach measures and implementation are suitable for our watershed and the protection of Atlantic Salmon.
