MIRAMICHI SALMON ASSOCIATION GAINING SUPPORT FOR
ATLANTIC SALMON RECOVERY PLAN
SOUTH ESK, NB – The Miramichi Salmon Association’s (MSA) recently released Atlantic Salmon Recovery Plan has quickly gained its first endorsement. The New Brunswick Salmon Council (NBSC) has submitted a letter of support to the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) and publicly supported the plan.
“Adoption of the MSA plan’s recommendations is critically important,” said John Pugh, NBSC president. “Considering the recent estimate from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) that salmon returns to the Miramichi this year were the lowest in recorded history, decisive action on the crisis can no longer wait.”
MSA believes the local decline can be attributed to three main factors: predation, habitat degradation and stock management. The MSA has released its plan to partnering organizations, governments and the public. In coming weeks MSA is meeting with individual stakeholders to review plan details. Local support will help move the plan forward.
Those wishing to learn more about the Recovery Plan, or to arrange a presentation about salmon conservation issues on the Miramichi, may contact the MSA at (506) 622-4000.
The Miramichi Salmon Association is a conservation charity based out of South Esk, NB with over 2,500 members and supporters. MSA has invested over $1 million in its river programs in the past five years.
