The Bud Bird Award Committee is pleased to recognize Morris Green with the highest honour the MSA can bestow – an Award that recognizes Morris’s life-long contributions to the conservation of the Atlantic salmon and its critically important role, along with NB’s other great natural resources, in shaping and influencing the ‘Miramichi Way of Life’.
Now retired, Morris has had a storied career as a school educator (26 years), a NB politician (a 3-Term MLA: 1978, 1982, and 1987), a freelance writer and so much more. During his tenure as an MLA, he was a staunch advocate for the conservation of our rivers and forests. As Minister of Natural Resources & Energy (1987-1991), he worked closely with the MSA and others to establish salmon barriers on the NW Miramichi and Tobique rivers, as well as province wide river clean-ups and fish habitat restorations programs. Additionally, over the past number of decades, he has also been part of numerous lobbying efforts with DFO, advocating for action on important fishery issues. Morris was also highly influential in establishing the Atlantic Salmon Museum and has served multiple terms on its BOD.
More recently, Morris has turned his focused to story-telling, having now written 3 must read books; “160 Years of Salmon Stories” (2014), “Burnt Hill” (2019) and “Men and Mills of the Miramichi” (2023).
Named in honour of Bud Bird, O.C., the Award recognizes and applauds Bud’s dedicated commitment and service to the conservation of the wild Atlantic salmon. In addition to having served as President, Board Chair and Chairman Emeritus of the MSA, other notable leadership roles included Director of Atlantic Salmon Federation, Canada’s Commissioner to the North Atlantic Salmon Conservation Organization (NASCO) and New Brunswick’s Minister of Natural Resources (1978-1982).
