Bud Bird Award in Salmon Conservation

The Bud Bird Award in Salmon Conservation is the highest honour to be conferred by the Miramichi Salmon Association (MSA). It is awarded annually to a deserving individual, group, organization or business that has exemplified and practiced a deep and lasting commitment to the conservation of the wild Atlantic salmon and or to safeguarding the environmental integrity of the Miramichi River watershed for the benefit of all species.

The Award recognizes constructive and innovative leadership in any or all areas of activity that have impact upon environmental protection and conservation of the wild salmon species, including but not limited to volunteerism and or the practice of advocacy, politics, Indigenous relations, climate action, academia, industry, business or commercial river management.

Named in honour of J.W. Bud Bird, O.C., the Award recognizes and applauds Bud’s dedicated commitment and service to the conservation of the wild Atlantic salmon. In addition to having served as President, Board Chair and Chairman Emeritus of the MSA, other notable leadership roles included Director of Atlantic Salmon Federation, Canada’s Commissioner to the North Atlantic Salmon Conservation Organization (NASCO) and New Brunswick’s Minister of Natural Resources (1978-1982).
